MU Health Policy Summit focuses on childhood obesity, health literacy COLUMBIA, Mo. ― The University of Missouri Center for Health Policy will host the sixth annual Missouri Health Policy Summit from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 3300 Vandiver Drive, Columbia, Mo. “The purpose of the summit is to provide a forum for serious policy discussion among Missouri's key stakeholders in health and health policy,” said Karen Edison, M.D., co-director of the MU Center for Health Policy and chair of the MU School of Medicine’s Department of Dermatology. “The summit will offer an examination of the complex issues surrounding health policy topics, with an emphasis on childhood obesity and health literacy.” Featured speakers include Morgan Spurlock, an Academy Award-nominated film director and creator and producer of FX’s critically acclaimed and award-winning series, 30 Days, and the Academy Award-nominated documentary, Super Size Me; T.R. Reid, the Rocky Mountain, Colo.-based bureau chief of the Washington Post; and Andrew Pleasant, Ph.D., an assistant professor at Rutgers University in the Department of Human Ecology and the Extension Department of Family and Community Heath Sciences. “The main goal of our center and annual summits is to promote policies and practices of Missouri’s health care institutions so that they can offer the best possible outcomes by involving patients in their own health decisions,” said Kristofer Hagglund, Ph.D., co-director of the MU Center for Health Policy, associate dean for health policy and professor of health psychology at the University of Missouri School of Health Professions. “We want to ensure that information resources are available and encourage interactions between health care providers and the public to promote a greater understanding of health and medical information.” For more information about the MU Center for Health Policy or to register for the policy summit, please visit http://healthpolicy.missouri.edu.
