Ellis Fischel Cancer Center promotes lung cancer awareness

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Ellis Fischel Cancer Center will sponsor a lung cancer community awareness and education event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wed., Nov. 5, in Boone Electric Cooperative’s Community Room, 1413 Rangeline St., Columbia, Mo.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women, with more than 200,000 people diagnosed with the disease annually.

The awareness event will feature physicians from Ellis Fischel Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary lung cancer team, who will explain what a multidisciplinary team approach to lung cancer care is and how it benefits the patient. Each physician will discuss the impact of lung cancer and future directions in care related to each physician’s specialty.

The American Cancer Society, the Boone County Health Department and representatives from local lung cancer support groups will offer educational information and presentations about lung cancer. Among the topics to be discussed are risk factors, prevention methods, early detection, treatment options and coping with the disease. Smoking-cessation and lung cancer support group information will also be available.
