UMHC programs promote staff career growth
University of Missouri Health Care will honor graduates of two accelerated career development programs at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 2, in a ceremony at Columbia Regional Hospital's Health Pavilion, 404 Keene St.
Participants will be graduating from the School at Work program and the Expanding Your Career and Health Care Opportunities program. The objective of both programs is to encourage career growth of existing staff members through specialized training.
School at Work is a career development system for entry-level workers in the health care industry. School at Work is an eight-month program that prepares employees for job advancement and for entrance to local colleges. The coursework includes classes such as writing, grammar, math, communications, organization, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and medical ethics.
Expanding Your Career and Health Care Opportunities is a five-month program that helps mid-career level health care staff evaluate career path possibilities. The program covers most of the same coursework as the School at Work program, but is a shorter course meant to encourage and prepare staff members for educational advancement.
"I want to thank University of Missouri Health Care for giving employees like myself the chance to take advantage of this opportunity," said Janet Baker, patient service representative at University Physicians-Green Meadows Clinic and graduate of the Expanding Your Career and Health Care Opportunities program. "Learning to set deadlines and goals for myself as far as a career has been both challenging and rewarding. It has really made me think about what I want to do with the rest of my life. Therefore, I have enrolled in evening classes for the fall semester at Columbia College, to get a degree in health care administration. This will give me a degree so that I can work in a wide variety of areas in the health care arena."
The 11 graduates who have completed the 2008 School at Work course include Renee Allen, patient service representative at University Physicians-Smiley Lane Clinic; Carolyn Fulton, food service worker III at Columbia Regional Hospital; Kathy Gathercole, waitress at Main Street Café in University Hospital; Ante Hatton, senior food services attendant at University Hospital; Heidi Hoskins, patient care transporter at University Hospital; Anna Johnson, lead instrument technician II at University Hospital; Wanda Long, housekeeping supervisor at University Hospital; Maria Santizo, office support staff III in language services for University of Missouri Health Care; Artice Whitaker, food service worker II at University Hospital; Michelle Woltering, unit clerk at Columbia Regional Hospital; and Gene Zigler, nurse technician at Columbia Regional Hospital.
